Should I Bring My 70-300mm Telephoto Lens On Nyc Tour?

It’s kinda big and heavy, I’m wondering if maybe I won’t really need it anyway. I will be bringing a Nikkor prime 50mm F/1.4 and also a 10-20 wide angle lens (for the view from the Empire State Building!)
Would you bring the telephoto, or leave it home?

  1. That lens does not weight much … take all your lenses, however the 10-24 mm lens will be used the most.

  2. Those lenses aren’t very big, so I would urge you to bring them all. The normal prime lens will be handy for in places with low light or where flash photography is prohibited or impractical. Your telephoto zoom will not only be useful for bringing distant objects close, but will also be essential for shooting candids of “interesting” human subjects (which are very plentiful in NY). When I shoot around Manhattan, I use my 80-400mm just as much as my 24-70mm.

  3. You didn’t mention the speed of the telephoto, but I would probably leave the 50mm home and take the telephoto. Don’t forget that theres a zoo in Central Park. Enjoy your trip.

  4. There will be times that you will wish you had brought it with you. If you’re going with someone whom you trust (and who is willing to help you), you can ask that person to help you carry it, too.

  5. You’ll wish you had it if you don’t bring it.

  6. Telephoto? I think that in New York, there are more wide-angle views. If it is big an heavy, bring the prime lens, and the wide angle lens.

  7. If you wish to capture whatever you wish to capture, bring all your traps.
