I’m Taking My 10-year-old Son On A Yankees Trip In Nyc For 4 Days? Other Than Liberty, Got Recommendations?
Other than the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building……..I saw the Beast and Shark thrill rides online (are they any good?)………we are staying right in the heart of Times Square, any help would be greatly appreciated!
For the Satue and the Emp, be prepared for long lines and pricey tickets. Espeically during the summer. We’re talking an hour just to get on the ferry to take you to liberty island.
If you run out of time or decide you don’t want to deal with the long waits, there are alternatives.
You can still see the Statue from a decent distance from the Staten Island Ferry. The ride is free and the subway takes you right to the terminal. You ride the ferry across to Staten Island, viewing the Statue on the way, and then ride it back to Manhattan. It’s most beautiful at sunset.
The top of the Rockefeller Center is a much better alternative to the Emp Building, where lines can also cost you an extra hour or more! For one, the “Top of the Rock” has clear sections of glass and three levels of observation decks. As opposed to the regular level at the Emp or the more pricery higher level, which are both surrounded by wire mesh and fencing.
The Top of the Rock also has tickets with open-ended times. For instance, if your ticket is for 11:00am. You can show up anytime around or after 11am, and stay for as long as you like. My family spent at least an hour there and we actually went back twice just for the view and photo ops. Both times we went later at night and there were only a handful of people walking around the three decks. http://www.topoftherocknyc.com/
If you go to the Top of the Rock, don’t forget to check out the Target room. If you’re not sure which floor its on or how to get there, ask one of the security guards or a friendly face. You may see it from the floor below, with brilliant lights glowing and changing from within. It’s an interactive light room that responds to your movements. Lights line the walls and ceiling. Sometimes visitors can create “combos” that light up the entire room and produce various musical sounds.

Since you’re already in Times Square, you’ll have lots of activities and options. Check out the largest ToysRUs store there. I believe it’s 4 stories high, and there is a ferris wheel on the inside! For my family with ages ranging 14-50, every one of us enjoyed exploring the massive toy store.http://www9.toysrus.com/timessquare/http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-a…
There is also an NBA store and Niketown. I’m not sure where they’re located though, so if you’re interested, run a search on them.
If your son enjoys any Asian-related merchandise, check out Chinatown during the day. You can find all kinds of great (and cheap) merchandise for yourself or family back home.
There is also, in Time’s Square, an Element/Billabong store near the Hard Rock Cafe. If you son is into that sort of style, he probably knows the brand names and might enjoy looking around. They also sell their skateboards and wheels there.
For candy and chocolate fanatics, there’s a Hershey Store and M&M World there in Times Square. The Hershey Store isn’t anything impressive but there’s a good selection of chocolate and packages you can put together yourself. M&M World has three stories and various activities, as well as a large supply of merchandise and every color M&M you can think of. If you go, check out the “What’s your color?” (or something of the sort) machine. The machine “scans” you and discovers your personality to pinpoint which M&M color is right for you. It seemed pretty accurate.
Also check out Central Park. We didn’t have time to go very far in, but I know they have lots of great activities for kids. If your son liked the movie Stuart Little, you can take him to the pond where the boat race scene was shot.
That’s about all we had time to check out, so that’s all I’ve got. I’m not sure about those thrill rides either. Hope you and your son have a blast!
Yes.
If you arrive to the stadium early, he can visit the monument center in Yankee stadium.
While in NYC …
Take him to Times Square at night. He’ll love all the lights that will be on and the stores/shops in the area (M&M store, Hershey’s store, Yankee store, Cold Stone Creamery, just to name a few).
You should also take him to the observation deck of the Rockefeller Center and/or the Empire State Building so he can get a bird’s eye view of the city and skylines.
My friend, may I recommed a few places.

FAO Schwartz has a section where he can design his own matchbox car. I think it’s $25.00. Check out Mars2112 it’s a theme restaurant with a great Mars type atmosphere. Aliens in costume serve the food. It also has a simulated ride and a small arcade. I never rode the beast, but I here it’s good.
Nintendo World at Rockefeller Center (he can spend the whole day in there for free playing the Wii Fit and all their other games)…my kids love going there and it costs me nothing (unless I want to buy something)…awesome store!!!
