I’m A College Student And Will Be In Nyc For One Night In March. Where Should I Stay To Maximize My Time?
We’re interested in seeing primarily the hot spots — Central Park, Times Square, The Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, etc. We only have about 24 hours, so we’d like to stay in a central location that allows us to spend our time sightseeing instead of traveling.
We’re driving in, so we definitely need parking for the night, and ideally the room won’t cost us a fortune (we are college students, afterall). I’ve had bad luck in the past with hostels, so I’d like to avoid those at all costs.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
OK. So you will be here for only a day, need a reasonable place near (25 minutes subway) to Manhattan, a place to park the car for free, and be in a safe area –
Try this Hotel in Queens. It is a short drive over the 59th St bridge (Queens borough bridge), close to other major arteries in and out of NYC, readily accessible to public transportation from Manhattan and in a safe neighborhood.

a motel in queens or brooklyn might be the answer. i was going to say new jersey, but then you would have to pay toll to get into nyc. queens and brooklyn is just a hop over a bridge to get into manhattan and they should offer parking. good luck.
If you are there before March 8, do all the things you mentioned during the day and go see Eddie Izzard at the Union Theatre in the evening. Show starts at 10.30pm, is fantabulous and after the show you can still go to the Virgin store for CD shopping.
I’ve been looking for hotels that don’t cost an arm and leg Hotel 17 fits the bill. I haven’t stayed there myself yet, but everything I’ve read seems good. And hey, remember; it’s New York!
The Continental Hostel. It’s no Holiday Inn, but it is affordable and clean. It’s in the Morningside area. It’s on W. 95th. A very trendy neighborhood. You can tell this building use to be an old apartment building. The bathrooms are shared on the floors but very clean. There is 24-hour security so your things are pretty save. There aren’t TV’s in the room, but you won’t need one anyway. It is in the 1,2 and 3 train lines. Parking is good in this area. If there isn’t parking on W. 95th you can find parking on one of the near by parallel streets. They have a lounge with free Wi-fi and they have lockers if you need them. If you can go to hotels.com or a site like that to look up the rates. Trust me, it’s not bad at all. Especially for college students on a budget. That’s all that are there anyway, college or former college students on a budget.
There are several resonably priced hotels in New York City. All in Queens, which is very accessible to the subway and is near parking.

Since these hotels have on-site parking, you can park your car there and take the subway into Manhattan as an alternative. Do not, I repeat, don not drive into Manhattan.
