Environmental Improvement? Has This Cold Weather Made You Decide To Make Improvements In Your Home In Spring?
One of our water pipes froze and burst so we will
be working on the foundation all the way around
the house to make sure no cold air can get under
there again. Lots of caulking to do, too.
I have my house winter ready after 28 years in the same place.
I’d love to do some improvements. Unfortunately, there is no money & I don’t qualify for loans & the owner of the house, who happens to be a relative, can’t afford to update it either. I’ve always lived with single pane windows, no insulation, no heat & at times, no hot water! It doesn’t get very cold in my end of California for extended periods of time. I suffer those 3 months of 40 & below temps, but I have to save up my $ for the AC in the extreme summer heat. So far, so good. At least I don’t have to live in senior housing with a bunch of nut jobs.
My area has a LOT of sub-standard housing & people over 55 living on the “edge” with medications provided free of charge by the government & gleefully consumed by the aging teenagers who still think it’s cool to get blitzed with booze & pills! They have many apartment fires when they fall asleep with lit cigarettes & the entire building suffers during mass evacuations!
NO. According to the talking heads this cold weather is just an aberation and is part of an overall warming trend. Therefore, any money I put into making my house warmer in winter will be a waste.
I figure the insulation I used to keep the heat inside my apartment in winter will keep the air conditioning from escaping in the summer.
Bogey you are right.I live in Atlanta and most of these older apartments are very poorly sealed.Thank goodness for reading about using rolled newspaper around the windows on YA.
I bought my house last summer, and the previous tenant said he spent $1600 per month on heat last year. We have spent about $40k getting Arctic windows and doors in, which our contractor says we should get back in fuel savings in 3 or 4 years.
So far, we have paid about $2k in propane (since September), and we bought 10 cords of wood, at $250 per cord, and we have barely begun to use it.
So far, so good, but it is around -43C right now, so we are burning the wood pretty quickly! We are going to continue with renovations – radiant heat flooring for the lower floor is a big possibility.
We actually did this in the fall and are happy that we did. We had been putting it off for several years and for some reason got inspired even though they had originally predicted a warmer winter than normal. There’s lots of stimulus projects out there for those who are low income which will help with this plus tax credits for some items. Payback isnt immediate but savings on utility costs should cover the costs eventually.
We’re pretty snug every winter, but we’re used to severe weather up north. I remember living in Atlanta during a record breaking cold winter, and there was no way those buildings are insulated. I might as well have had the windows wide open because I nearly froze to death.
the cold weather has made me want to move to a warmer place.we have electric heat and my winter senior assistance for the electric has run out this month and i dread to see next months bill.we definetly need a new heating unit.this one double times.i bet our bill will be over 300 dollars.[JD-come on down here to the south i"ll make ya a pot of beans and some cornbread.]
We had new insulation in our loft just before Christmas. I`d like cavity wall insulation as well because I`ve heard not only does it help to keep the house warm in winter but cooler in the Summer. Maybe we`ll get it done next year as we`ve got the drive to block pave this year.
I want to but dont have the money as of yet I would actually like copper gutters complete with a rain chains, solar panel roof, water filters in my kitchen, and more moss in my yard…
Nope, it’s cold here every winter so we made all the improvements within the first few years we lived here, about 20 years ago.
Hubby’s talking about insulating around the heat “run” from the furnace., Always just a tad cool in the living room, as the runs go a long ways.
More insulation, storm windows … this house burned partway down and doesn’t have any insulation in the walls in the back half – we wear a lot of sweaters and blankets.
No, our house is tight enough to stand the cold weather.
Did this last summer. put in new furnace and a/c. furnace is working good
No living in this climate my home is about as winterize as I can get it.
I’ll be painting where I ripped off the tape
Yes by Spring I plan on being some place not so hot. Maybe back to America. If so it will be south.
all of the above, and we are looking for a log splitter.
